When stepping back over the past 3 years to look at our sport, World Kayak has slowly developed a snapshot of a successful sport. It is from that snapshot we continue to develop, introducing what we feel is missing from our paddling community. To do this, a good number of folks got involved in research; research that took us to other successful sports to seek out the common denominators of their success. Once our research was done, we took those common denominators and applied it over our sport. The findings were very interesting and helped us map out the paths to come in our World Kayak programming.
So, here’s what WK would like to see of our sport:

World Kayak is spearheading the new Let’s Go Paddling initiative for the summer of 2010. The goal is to drive non-boaters to boating and boaters to whitewater kayaking. The program involves 40+ regions globally. In each region WK is helping plan a full month of paddlesports activity leading to a festival. Activities will include canoeing, kayaking, stand up boarding, dragon boats and much more; all encouraging non-boaters and boaters alike to join in a full month of boat play. At the end of the month a full festival will take place in each region, bringing the community together in a single event.
This entire event series will be backed by significant public relations. World Kayak is shoring up a growing list of outdoor sports media and will be managing a full regional, national and international press and social media campaign.
Each region will be supported by a Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is a kayak school or club who are at the ready to welcome new paddlers into formal education. World Kayak feels that having a ‘clear’ path to the sport is key to growth. The Welcome Centers will benefit from the PR/social media campaigns being lead by WK. To become a Welcome Center, please fill in the application HERE.
